The Wauwatosa School Board will meet for its second meeting of the month on Monday, August 28, 2023. The meeting will be held at the Fisher Administration Building (12121 West North Ave.) in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. A link to the meeting livestream can be found here.
The meeting will open with celebrations and recognitions of the following:
Century 21 for the donation of 49 backpacks.
Madison Elementary School for its efforts in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) through equitable, multi-level systems of supports.
Washington Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTA) for its $10,000 donation raised via the annual Timberwolf Trot, which will be used for PBIS and field trips for the 2023-24 school year.
Following review of the Consent Agenda and associated public comment, the Division of Human Resources will bring forth its Action to Approve Employee Benefits Renewal. Because the Board will be asked to vote on this item, public comment will be heard.
Then, the Division of Human Resources will ask the Board to Approve Ms. Jessica Huinker’s contract as Director of Finance. Again, because the Board will be asked to vote, public comment will be heard on this item.
Next, the Finance + Resource Committee will provide a report to the Board. No action will be taken, and public comment will not be heard.
The Board will be asked to take Action to Approve a Five Year Lease for Office Space at 11803 W. North Avenue for the Wauwatosa Recreation Department. Prior to the Board’s vote, public comment will be heard. Please note that the Wauwatosa School District has reached a verbal agreement to share the cost of renovations necessary for ADA compliance with the property owner on a 50/50 basis. This will be presented as an addendum to the lease. Please also note that the District’s architect believes that the property is ready for occupancy immediately, as the accessibility issues are not required by code.
The Board will also have a first reading of several policies. The Board will possibly act on a select few of these policies; however, it is expected that some of these policies will only be read, and will be acted upon at a future Board meeting. All of the policies can be found here.
Please note that a clause related to the attendance zone for McKinley students was inadvertently left on the draft 5120 policy that is linked within BoardDocs. The portion of this policy regarding the McKinley attendance zone will be tabled, and any recommendation regarding the McKinley attendance zone will be brought forth by the Tosa 2075 Task Force. In short, the Board will not be voting to modify the attendance zone area for McKinley at the August 28 meeting.
The only portion of policy 5120 that the Board may act upon on August 28, 2023 is the portion that allows families who move within district boundaries to continue attending their original school attendance zone pattern through middle and high school. Stakeholders may recall that current language requires families to shift to their current attendance zone after a move within district boundaries. For example, if a child attends school at Eisenhower Elementary School and their family moves into the Roosevelt Elementary zone, this proposed policy language would allow the child to continue to attend Eisenhower, and then continue on that same track to attend Whitman Middle School and Wauwatosa West High School.
The Board and the District recognize that the topic of McKinley boundary areas is important for many members of our community. For that reason, following the recommendation of the Tosa 2075 Task Force, the Board intends to hold listening sessions related to this topic to ensure the perspective and input from all stakeholders can be considered.
Opportunity for public comment on non-agenda items will be provided immediately following the Call to Order and immediately preceding the Board’s adjournment into an Executive (Closed) Session related to Fox v. Wauwatosa School District Board of Education. The Board will return to open session to announce or take action, if any and appropriate, arising out of this closed session. Again, the Board will adjourn into an Executive (Closed) Session related to resolving an employee grievance filed by a former District employee and a resignation agreement with a current District employee. The Board will again return to open session to announce or take action, if any and appropriate, arising out of this second closed session.
