Longfellow Middle School

The Longfellow Middle School pool was constructed in 1955 and has served the community of Wauwatosa for nearly 70 years.

In December of 2016, Ramaker + Associates conducted a professional evaluation of all District swimming pools. The evaluation report for the pool at Longfellow Middle School stated that the integrity of the pool basin was the “largest concern,” in addition to other operational deficiencies.

A subsequent engineering evaluation of the pool and basin was conducted in February of 2024. Please find a link to that report here. The report identified that ongoing corrosion has worsened the structural integrity of the pool basin, and the report recommended closing the pool or planning into large-scale repairs or full replacement within a year, before a catastrophic failure occurred. According to the report, “Due to the original construction and current condition, the combination of repairs mentioned…could be equivalent to building a new pool in terms of construction required.”

Based on this information, and out of an abundance of caution, the Longfellow Middle School pool will be closed indefinitely, effective July 1, 2024.  The District operates three other fully functional pools at Whitman Middle School, Wauwatosa East High School and Wauwatosa West High School, which will be utilized to meet current community needs.
