State Fair Art Contest

Numerous art students from Wauwatosa East and Wauwatosa West High School submitted artwork to the Wisconsin State Fair Young People’s Art Exhibit (YPAE) on March 25. Of these students, 10 earned cash prizes and the honor of having their artwork featured at the state fair from August 1-11.

Out of the 18 pieces submitted by Wauwatosa East, five students received cash prizes for six pieces, with several also receiving special awards. Notably, artwork from all four grade levels was selected for exhibition. The awardees include Theo Marten, Naomi Molina (recipient of the Dynamic Digital Award), Tillie Vande Hei (submitted two pieces and awarded the Cream of the Crop Award), Phoenix Verdin (recipient of the Judge’s Favorite Award), and Sylvia Zautner.

Similarly, Wauwatosa West students demonstrated their artistic talent, with five students awarded first through third place in various categories, ranging from ceramics to mixed media. Meghan Brandenburg, Rue Jacobson, Sam Mielcarek, Samantha Pelot, and Kinley Schmidbauer all received recognition for their submissions.

“We are incredibly proud of our students' achievements in the Wisconsin State Fair Young People’s Art Exhibit,” said Jessica Belich, Head of the Wauwatosa West High School Art Department. “Having their artwork featured at the state fair is an amazing opportunity for them to showcase their talent to a wider audience and receive well-deserved recognition."

The YPAE is a competitive exhibit open to students in grades six through 12 who are currently enrolled in public, private, parochial, or home school in Wisconsin. Entries may include painting, drawing, computer-generated art, printmaking, design, sculpture, fabric craft, jewelry, photography, and ceramic.

“We are very proud of our students’ creativity and dedication to their craft,” said Dr. Demond Means, Superintendent of the Wauwatosa School District. “Their representation at the state fair is a testament to the fantastic artistic community we have in our schools. We sincerely congratulate all participants, and we are grateful for the amazing art educators who inspire and nurture these talents.”

Participants will have the chance to win additional ribbons and prizes while their artwork is on display at the fair.
